21 OT C ~ Is 66:18-21/Lk 13:22-30 ~ Rev. Benjamin Roberts, D.Min. "Entering the Banquet/Entrando al Banquete"

I used to hear the words of Isaiah and think about a garden near Mexico City where statues of the indigenous tribes bring offerings to Our Lady of Guadalupe. I used to hear the words of Isaiah and think about the gatherings of people from all over the world in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. But now I hear the words of Isaiah about the invitation of God inviting all of the peoples of the world to see and share in his glory, and I think about Sunday Mass here at Our Lady of Lourdes.

Isaiah tells us about the Lord gathering together all of the nations of the world to see his glory. All of the peoples of every nation and every language and every culture will be invited to the holy mountain of the Lord God. They will come to the holy city of Jerusalem and make their offerings to the Lord. It will not just be offerings of gold and silver. It will not just be the fruits of the earth. The people themselves will be the acceptable offering to God. More precious than gold or silver are the people the Lord has invited to be his own. 

This invitation announced by the Prophet Isaiah has been made present to us in the Lord Jesus. Jesus himself is the invitation of God. Jesus tells us of the banquet of the Kingdom of heaven. To the table at the banquet will come people from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and they will recline at the table of the banquet. They are not invited as servants, but as friends of the master. And yet, not all will accept the invitation. Some will reject the invitation to the banquet, just as some reject the invitation to join the celebration here. Not all will take their place at the table of the master.

The preacher to the Hebrews tells us about the discipline of our loving God and Father. This is not discipline for the sake of punishment. This is not even the discipline given because of disobedience. This is the discipline that leads to endurance. This is the discipline that enables us to stand fast in our difficulties and fight against temptations. This is the discipline of the athlete of God who, with eyes fixed on the unveiled glory of Christ, runs the race to the kingdom. The Lord God who gives us the invitation also prepares us to respond to the invitation. We receive the discipline of God because we are beloved children of God called to the house of the Father.

And the entrance to the house of the Father is the narrow gate. We hear the parable of those who were locked out of the banquet. They did not want to enter the banquet through the narrow gate. They wanted to respond to the invitation on their own terms. Maybe they rejected the other people who were invited. They rejected the discipline. They claimed to have eaten in the company of the master, and they claimed to have heard him teach, but the master did not know them. They had indeed heard the word and seen the meal. But they merely wanted to be students who acquired knowledge, and not disciples who sought to follow the way of the Lord. They wanted to know about the master.  They did not seek to know him. And for that reason, they could not enter the narrow gate. 

For the narrow gate is only wide enough for one person. Only through union with the person of Jesus Christ, who crushes the gates of hell and opens the gate of heaven by the blood of his holy cross, can we enter into the banquet. Only through the invitation of the Lord given freely to us can we approach the gate. Only through the loving and careful acceptance of the discipline of the Lord can we be united with Christ Jesus. And only through him, and with him, and in him do we take our place at the banquet and recline at the table in the Kingdom of the Father.

Solía ​​escuchar las palabras de Isaías y pensar en un jardín cerca de la Ciudad de México donde los estatuas de las tribus indígenas traen ofrendas a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Solía ​​escuchar las palabras de Isaías y pensar en las reuniones de personas de todo el mundo en la Plaza de San Pedro en el Vaticano. Pero ahora escucho las palabras de Isaías sobre la invitación de Dios invitando a todos los pueblos del mundo a ver y compartir su gloria, y pienso en la Misa dominical aquí en Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Isaías nos dice que el Señor reunió a todas las naciones del mundo para ver su gloria. Todos los pueblos de todas las naciones y de todos los idiomas y de todas las culturas serán invitados al monte santo del Señor Dios. Vendrán a la ciudad santa de Jerusalén y harán sus ofrendas al Señor. No serán solo ofrendas de oro y plata. No serán sólo los frutos de la tierra. El pueblo mismo será la ofrenda aceptable a Dios. Más precioso que el oro o la plata es el pueblo que el Señor ha invitado a ser suyo.

Esta invitación anunciada por el profeta Isaías se nos ha hecho presente en el Señor Jesús. Jesús mismo es la invitación de Dios. Jesús nos habla del banquete del Reino de los cielos. A la mesa del banquete vendrá gente del este y del oeste, del norte y del sur, y se sentarán a la mesa del banquete. No son invitados como sirvientes, sino como amigos del amo. Y, sin embargo, no todos aceptarán la invitación. Algunos rechazarán la invitación al banquete, así como algunos rechazarán la invitación a unirse a la celebración aquí. No todos ocuparán su lugar en la mesa del maestro.

El predicador a los Hebreos nos habla de la disciplina de nuestro amoroso Dios y Padre. Esto no es disciplina por el bien del castigo. Esta ni siquiera es la disciplina dada por la desobediencia. Esta es la disciplina que conduce a la resistencia. Esta es la disciplina que nos permite permanecer firmes en nuestras dificultades y luchar contra las tentaciones. Esta es la disciplina del atleta de Dios que, con los ojos fijos en la gloria descubierta de Cristo, corre la carrera hacia el reino. El Señor Dios que nos da la invitación también nos prepara para responder a la invitación. Recibimos la disciplina de Dios porque somos hijos amados de Dios llamados a la casa del Padre.

Y la entrada a la casa del Padre es la puerta estrecha. Escuchamos la parábola de los que fueron excluidos del banquete. No querían entrar al banquete por la puerta estrecha. Querían responder a la invitación en sus propios términos. Tal vez rechazaron a las otras personas que fueron invitadas. Rechazaron la disciplina. Decían haber comido en compañía del maestro, y decían haberlo oído enseñar, pero el maestro no los conocía. Ciertamente habían oído la palabra y visto la comida. Pero ellos simplemente querían ser estudiantes que adquirieran conocimiento, y no discípulos que buscaran seguir el camino del Señor. Querían saber sobre el maestro. Ellos no buscaron conocerlo. Y por eso, no podían entrar por la puerta estrecha.

Porque la puerta estrecha solo es lo suficientemente ancha para una persona. Sólo a través de la unión con la persona de Jesucristo, que aplasta las puertas del infierno y abre las puertas del cielo por la sangre de su santa cruz, podemos entrar en el banquete. Sólo a través de la invitación que el Señor nos ha dado gratuitamente podemos acercarnos a la puerta. Sólo a través de la aceptación amorosa y cuidadosa de la disciplina del Señor podemos estar unidos con Cristo Jesús. Y sólo por él, y con él, y en él podemos tomar nuestro lugar en el banquete y sentarnos a la mesa en el Reino del Padre.
